Description
If I am not misinformed, this bridge was designed by the same guy who designed the George Washington Bridge which connects NYC with the west of the USA.
My buddy and I had just done a short hike north of here and we took a quick (closing time) stroll onto the "Walkway Over The Hudson" which was, within my lifetime ago an active freight train bridge. We are standing on, what must have been a pretty frightful bit of old modern technology.
Every time I am in the woods in the Hudson Valley I can't help but think about those men on the Half Moon (the boat Henry Hudson was using to try to find the waterway through North America, to the East (which was far to the West of here). The river is magnificent and powerful and serene. It has been made kempt along the banks by those same rail companies. But they can only do so much about straightening it out.
If you have heard of the city named Poughkeepsie it is more than likely you have heard because it is a singular name (I don't think there is a Poughkeepsie anyplace other than right to the left. I'm facing South. I have never heard of a "New Poughkeepsie.") that sounds like it ought to be funny.
To the right (west bank) is Highland. Now there are several iterations of "Highland" within 30 miles of Highland (none of them are related to the others.) So that name is no Poughkeepsie.
Few more facts, It is the FDR bridge commemorating the fact that Hyde Park is just to the north of this bridge. The Walkway Over The Hudson was a grass roots operation that grew out of people's desire to save the rail bridge which had burned (the RR ties) and was simply left to rot. It is a VERY popular destination for locals and tourists. A tremendous success that highlights the power of positive action. (I don't have a picture of it but here is a website for it https://walkway.org/
